How to Renew a Haitian Passport

Renew a Haitian passport from the United States: documents to bring, fees, renewal by mail, lost passports and tips to avoid delays, based on official embassy sources.

Last updated October 8, 2026

KONBIT is not a government office. Everything below comes from the Embassy of Haiti in Washington, D.C., checked on October 8, 2026. Rules and fees can differ by consulate and change without notice, so call your consulate before you go.

When to renew

Adult passports are valid for ten years and minor passports for five years. No changes are allowed during that time; a new name or corrected details means a new, paid application (Embassy of Haiti). The embassy also warns: do not wait until the last minute, and call the consular section before you travel (fees page).

Where to apply

In the United States, you apply at the consular section of the Embassy of Haiti or the consulate general that serves your area. The Washington consular section is at 2311 Massachusetts Ave. N.W., open Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., phone +1 202-332-4090 (consular services).

Documents to bring

From the embassy's passport application requirements (source):

  • A completed and signed passport application form.
  • A birth certificate issued by the Haitian National Archives (Archives Nationales d'Haïti).
  • Your old passport plus one other valid ID, such as a driver's license, student card or residence card.
  • If you don't have the old passport: two valid pieces of identification.
  • Two color passport photos on a white background, less than three months old.
  • Married women changing their name: the marriage certificate (extract or original).
  • Divorced applicants changing their name: the original divorce certificate.
  • Widows changing their name: the husband's death certificate.
  • Minors: a parental authorization signed by a parent or legal guardian.
  • Lost valid passport: a police report.

Fees

The embassy's own pages list two different sets of prices, so treat these as a guide and confirm the current amount before paying.

Minor, renewal by mailNot listed$140 ($120 + $20 FedEx), 10 to 14 business days

Sources: fees page, 10-year passport announcement. The fees page says payment is by certified check or cashier's check payable to the Embassy of Haiti; cash and personal checks are not accepted.

Step by step

  • Call your consulate to confirm the fee, hours and whether you need an appointment.
  • Gather every document on the list above, including originals.
  • Get two fresh color photos on a white background.
  • Fill out and sign the application form.
  • Prepare a certified or cashier's check for the confirmed amount.
  • Submit in person during consular hours, or by mail if your consulate offers it.
  • Keep copies of everything you submit and your payment receipt.

Urgent travel to Haiti

In some cases of extreme urgency, a travel certificate (feuille de route) can be issued instead of a passport. It is valid for one month and one trip to Haiti only, and cannot be used to return to the United States (source).

Common mistakes

  • Old photos, or photos without a white background.
  • Bringing a personal check or cash.
  • Missing the name-change document when your name differs from your old passport.
  • Waiting until a trip is booked to start the renewal.
  • Relying on a feuille de route when you need to come back to the United States.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Haitian passport valid?
According to the Embassy of Haiti in Washington, passports are issued for ten years for adults and five years for minors under 18. No changes are allowed during that period; any change of information requires a new, paid application.
